synopsis

This Volume covers the period 1952 [my return from Korea] to 1960 [my qualification as a Gunnery Instructor].

This period details my transition from a Junior Artillery Officer to a Staff Officer in a Brigade HQ serving in Canada and Germany.

This was my transition from a purely Artillery appointment to one in the General Staff.

It then covers my transition from a regular Artillery Officer to the senior Artillery position of “IG” — Instructor in Gunnery — the highest technical position in the Corps.

excerpt

Arriving in Soest [Germany] was like entering a whole new world!

Soest was the centre of a fairy-tale world in which we would eventually live for 6 of our seven years in Germany.

A world that, by all appearances, was unchanged over the previous 500 years, or more!

I was stepping back in history — and I was thrilled at the prospect!

The Tudor style buildings; the tile roofs; the narrow and winding cobblestone streets; the stone City wall that held the old City safe through the Middle Ages; and the smells and the sounds!
